Airfryer Tandoori roast chicken- How to roast a whole chicken in Air Fryer

Ever since my Airfryer  arrived, I have almost been neglecting my frying pan process of cooking up meals. At least most of the stuff that I can experiment with the Airfryer.. Kababs, tikkis, samosas, even cakes for that matter, fish and paneer tikkas, chicken wings have been frequenting my kitchen even more then before in the name of almost zero-oil cooking. While the concept is one of the most amazing technologies that’s invented for cooking purposes, but largely its these awesome chicken dishes that keeps amazing me. In fact there has been a surfeit of airfyer made chicken recipes for me off late. However , the best of all that comes out clean and gorgeous is the whole chicken roast.. Andt he indian way of roasting with tandoori spices is the penultimate in terms of taste and texture.

And if you get a change to marinate it overnight, then its almost a killer meal.Enough to give a tough competition to your regular restaurant ordered tandoori chicken.

I honestly didnt believe  that it would turn out so well. Now with airfryer, as a new invention, there are tricks that you learn on experimenting. Just like a microwave, which needs some form of art and experimentation to cook varied dishes. While most indians use the microwave to warm food, neglecting its cooking properties, i must say that cooking with your microwave is definitely an easier way out and tasty too if you really experiment on a few occasions with the various mode and their combinations . Similarly, the airfryer is inadvertently a new technique , an unprecedentedly new product. Also the functions are very similar to our erstwhile bajaj oven, yet because of its technology of frying process in almost zero oil(and not baking), you can use your skills and creativity to experiment on a few dishes for sure.
And for me, a total freak on adapting oil free recipes, I shudder to even have one bite of a regular samosa or  a deep fried patty. But with the air fryer, its a completely new find healthy world for me .The baked samosas(which features in a post later) came out absolutely delicious , so did the other kebas and tikkis.
But by far the tandoori roast chicken is my hero of my Airfryer list of recipes.
In short, the roasting process works the best and hence any roast recipe will work out like a wonder. For my whole chicken, i used the reguar indian tandoori chicken masalas and marinated it overnight for a soft and tender dish.

In 40 minutes my bird came out crisp and hard on the outer edge with juicy tender chicken inside. Visually its  a treat , not to forget the taste. It gives out a perfect roast and burnt/smoked effect .The little butter/oil that you smear over the chicken is enough to give that resultant perfect look in terms of visual appeal. Not to forget the soft and juicy tender chicken.

1 whole chicken- i used 1 kg
For manrinade
Hung curd-3 tbsp
Tandoori masala-2 tbsp
red chilli powder-2 tsp
kashmiri mirch powder-2 tsp
cumin powder-2 tsp
coriander powder-2 tsp
kasuri methi-a pinch
salt-as per taste
ginger garlic paste- 2 tbsp
garam masala powder-2 tbsp
nutmeg powder- 1 tsp
lime juice- 1 tbsp
Oil- 2 tbsp
for stuffing inside the cavity
potato cubes
garlic cloves
half a lime


  • Clean the whole chicken( remove the skin) and marinate it with lime salt and pepper .keep it aside for 30 mins
  • Now marinate the chicken with all the marinade ingredients. Ensure that the chicken is marinated well inside the skin as well. ideally use your hands  to marinate the chicken well
  • Make slashes/ slits across the chicken for the marinade to enter. This is what I do. It also helps the chicken to cook faster and and comes out tender.Also it helps you to cut the peices later easily
  • Put half a lime, few garlic cloves  inside the bird. You could also put potatoes an boiled peas, which are marinated in the same marinade
  • Preheat the airfryer under 180 degrees for 10 minutes
  • Smear some oil in the pan. Put the chicken inside, and close the lid
  • Put the chicken for 20 mins under 180 degrees
  • Take it out after 20 minutes and turn over the bird an let it cook for under 10 mins
  • Now increase the temperature to 200degrees and further cook the chicken for 10 to 15 mins so that it gets a smoked and browned texture

Perfect for your house events, the resultant bird gives out a beautiful roasted and burnt look on the outer edge while the marination process lends it effect thus making  the chicken absolutely juicy, soft and tender. .I am incredibly amazed. It turns out  softer then the regular frying process.No hard times, devoid of any struggle, all you need is that 30-40 mins .With onion, green chutney and the regular side offerings you are ready for your treat..So do not wait here.. All you owners of the airfryer, this is the first dish that you should try ,for it wont fail to impress you.And for the rest, the lovers of fried and roasted meals, I think the airfryer is a good bet to buy not just for its faster and clean cooking process but more for its technology of using light oil, not to forget the awesome taste and texture that it impart to the dishes.
