15 May Bottle gourd curry with peanuts/Lauki ki subji with peanuts
Bottle gourd and peanuts seemed as an odd pairing to me for years.For the community that i grew up in ,this blend of an odd pair did not feature as a gastronomy delight.Bottle gourd was best knows as a a blend with fish,a fish and bottle gourd curry. It never excited me otherwise with its bland taste.Similarly penauts was and still is considered to be a snack that which is relished as tea time snack .And blending of this odd pair seems unimaginable .
But over a decade in Mumbai and 2 decades in Maharastra has definitely made me on comfortable grounds when it comes to maharashtran cusine. Although as a new entrant to this state , i never warmed up to the taste of peanuts in a recipe…On the streets, from the vendor, eating a 5 Rs pack of peanuts was the best use of peanuts is what I believed until i stepped into this state. So while in my hostel days, the strong smell of peanuts in the currys would almost make me loose my appetite. The canteen guys would daily make subjis with peanuts which were served to us ..
With time, of course ,it became a norm and so it was an acquired taste i believe for me.Peanuts feature most often in a variety of maharashtrian dishes and this is one of them. So here I am with no misgivings about the bending of this pair, working out an absolutely gorgeous , dish of gourd with peanuts which feature in my house pretty often too nowadays
